Les Miserables London

China Town and Theatre

Go to see
by Victor Hugo
if you get the chance it is a good show that most people
will enjoy. The theatre was packed when we went and although I only paid £21 per seat in the upper circle we had a good view. I bought our tickets from the theatre box office.  With
China Town on the doorstep of the Queens Theatre London at 51 Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W1D 6BA. you will spoilt for places to eat great food.

Busy colourful China Town

Once again I had taken advantage of booking months in advance to stay at the Travelodge in Covent Garden. A twin room cost £59 on Thursday 6th December. Not bad considering we were minutes away from the westend.

Christmas at Covent Garden

Covent Garden at 10 am

It was lovely to wander through Covent Garden recently as the stallholders perpared for the day. The Christmas decorations are lovely and as the crowds had not yet decended on the market it was easy to get some photos.

I won a trip to the National Book Awards London

I was lucky enough to win a trip to the National Book Awards  held on Tuesday 4th December and an overnight hotel stay with Specsavers.  The competition was on twitter and involved writing a 140 charater book review. I wrote about Jodie Picoult`s latest book Lone Wolf.

We stayed in the Pestana Hotel and Spa just beside Chelsea Bridge. I took my daughter Katrina with me and the hotel was really very plush. The staff were very friendly and we really enjoyed our stay. The room was much larger than we expected and we felt very spoilt.

The event itself was held in the stunning  Ballroom of the Mandarin  Oriental Hotel in Knightsbridge.

Lorraine Kelly hosted the Book Awards

Gok kindly let us get a photo with him.

Dave from the Hairy biker Duo was great and I was glad to see them win their award for their book.

Ian Rankin

Ian Rankin received a lifetime acheivement award which was really nice to see. We were served  champagne and canapes all evening. The Mandarin Oriental Hotel is famous for wonderful food so the canapes were varied and fabulous.

The ballroom was packed with authors, agents families and friends and we met some really nice people.  The Specsaver promotor Johnnie was a great host and made sure we were looked after all evening. We spent lots of time chatting to a lovely lady Helen who works for Woman magazine and the whole evening was really special.

Just facing the Mandarin Hotel is Harvey Nicks and their Christmas window display is colourful and artistic.

We had a lovely time made even more special as Katrina`s birthday was on 1st December and mine is in a few days.

Entering competitions can bring some amazing prizes.

The extremely popular Science Museum in London is full of amazing things spread over three floors. Entrance is free and you need three to four hours to  see it all.  London is so busy at Christmas time that the museum offers a relief from the shopping frenzy.

The nearby Natural History Museum has an Christmas Ice skating ring outside which is very pretty
when lit in the evenings.

My latest Win

I have won a gift set from a twitter party organised on behalf of boots by Britmums. A twitter party happens when someone in this case @Britmums invite people to take part and tweet answers to questions they ask. This one lasted one hour and the questions were set around what things you buy in boots, what is you favourite gift etc. A modern take on an online survey I suppose but more fun as people tweet to each other as well.

That`s another pressie sorted and I can`t wait for the National Book Awards trip on 4th December. which I won last week

Stormy Snowdonia Mountain Range

Snowdonia Mountain Range

Snowdonia Mountain range with peaks hidden in cloud

Snowdonia Mountain

The sun came out for a few hours today so I drove through Betswy-coed and up into the Snowdonia mountain range.  It was wild and windy up there but the views were stunning. The tops of the mountains were hidden in stormy clouds and the shrubs still had their Autumn colours.

Wild and Wonderful it certainly is and I didn`t even get  close to Snowdonia herself as the weather was getting worse. Mountains rescue vehicles were parked in the the place I stopped to take photos and only essential driving was advised. I hoped anyone out walking was safely down from the mountains.

I drove the hour back glad I had made the effort to see such natural splendour. It really is magnificent.

Castles and Fabulous Walks in Wales

I have been in North Wales now for six days and I thought I would list some of the highs and lows of being here. I am looking after my son and daughter-in-laws home and animals. Donkey, goat, 6 chickens, 4 ducks and 2 large dogs. I get a holiday in Wales and they get the chance to go away for a few days.

The lows:

Firstly I can`t get used to walking the dogs in the evening in the pitch black lanes. Obviously I have a torch but the lack of any street lights is strange.

Keeping my balance on a very muddy field when trying to feed ducks and chickens with a goat attacking the food bucket is fun only once.

Going out on the field to let chickens and ducks back in their runs is another muddy battle.

Then its out on the field with the torch to lock the stable for the night. Mucking out is not much fun either.

Foxes prowl at night hoping for a chicken dinner luckily the chickens and ducks are well protected.

Who would choose to be a farmer, its hard enough with just a few animals.

I do like to see all the animals running about in the day though and fresh eggs from chickens and ducks is a delight.

The highs:

The stunningly beautiful North Wales with her mountains rolling over the landscape.

My favourite place Conwy with its ancient castle and pretty harbour which is only 15 minutes away. The salt air blowing my face red in the wind and the screeching seagulls trying to pinch my chips. I come here every time I am in Wales.

Clear night skies that make you feel glad you can stare up at them.

When the wind is howling and its raining like today I practice my limited baking ability. The scones I made went to the dogs as they were very heavy, and I do mean very heavy. The blueberry muffins were a success and I am good at making soups so have made a few of those.

Reading a book in front of a real fire with the dogs curled up at my feet is heaven.

Taking the dogs out I enjoy and there is a lovely three miles walk around the hill here which has some nice views along the way. Wet and muddy walk at the moment though. Denbighshire Moors are amazing and the pretty church known as The Marble Church just down the lanes has a very tall steeple. I call it my gateway to Wales because when I see the steeple I know I am nearly here.

I love the Castles and the Walks

 Snowdonia Walks in North Wales

When I am in Wales I want to live here, when I return South I know I would miss the easy access to London. I come from Liverpool so I am a townie but Wales is wrapping me around its fingers tighter with each visit.
